HIGHLAND PARK – Recreational marijuana dispensaries will be permitted in the borough.
The Borough Council unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday that permits cannabis dispensaries here while prohibiting cultivation, manufacturing and wholesale businesses from operating in the borough.
Class 5 Cannabis Retailers will be permitted in the Central Business District and the Commercial District and Class 6 Cannabis Delivery Services will be permitted throughout the borough.
The vote followed a series of public discussions during open forums and council meetings this summer.
In reaching their decision, council members noted that 68% of Highland Park residents voted “yes” on the November 2020 ballot question about whether to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. The statewide average was 67% percent.
The council also recognized that officials in neighboring Edison and New Brunswick also voted to allow cannabis sales there.
